What it shows

The Coinbase Premium measures how far the Bitcoin price on Coinbase differs from a global average price. The gap is shown as a percentage. A positive value means Coinbase trades above the reference. A negative value means it trades below. Coinbase is a major US exchange that quotes in US dollars. People often read the gap as a hint of US-based demand compared with the rest of the world. The chart shows the gap through time for several intervals, from five minutes to one day, with the BTC price beside it.

How to read it

Read the sign first, then the size. Then check how long the value stays on one side of zero, because a short spike differs from a gap that lasts for hours. Compare the premium line with the BTC price line for the same interval. The page also shows the average and the minimum and maximum of the selected period. Change the interval to match your horizon. Short intervals show noise and timing. Daily intervals show the broader pattern. Do not read the last value alone.

  1. Read the sign of the latest premium: above or below zero.
  2. Compare its size with the average and range of the selected period.
  3. Check the duration: a short spike differs from a gap that lasts.

What to keep in mind

The premium is a price gap. It does not measure orders or money flow. Quote currency, such as dollars compared with dollar-pegged stablecoins, affects the gap. Venue liquidity and timestamp alignment also affect it. A positive reading does not prove that US institutions are buying. It can also appear in thin markets or around fast price moves. The reference price depends on the method of the data provider. Treat the premium as context beside ETF flows and on-chain data.

A missing value is not zero. Check the source and time under each data block before you compare numbers.

Questions

What is the Coinbase Premium Index?

It is the percentage difference between the Bitcoin price on Coinbase and a global average price. The gap is positive when Coinbase is higher and negative when it is lower. People use it to compare demand on a US dollar venue with demand elsewhere. It is a price comparison, not a count of orders.

What does a negative Coinbase Premium mean?

It means the Bitcoin price on Coinbase is below the global average price at that time. Possible reasons include weaker dollar-based demand, different quote currencies or short-term timing differences. The data cannot separate these causes. Check how long the value stays negative and compare it with price before you draw conclusions.

How is Coinbase Premium different from ETF flows?

Premium is a price difference between venues. ETF flows are the net creation and redemption of US fund shares. They can move together or apart. Use the ETF pages for fund activity and this page for the pricing gap. Neither one alone explains total demand.
